The Randolph Theatre
Seeking Refugee - various
736 BAthurst Street
Toronto, ON
CANADA [map]
Price: $12

I am the Music Director for a Toronto Fringe Festival show in July at the Randolph Theatre. "Seeking Refuge" won the Paul O'Sullivan Prize for best new musical script at the Fringe, and it's a powerful and exciting new Canadian musical.

It's a story inspired by recent world events - about two sisters struggling to survive amid the chaos of civil war, left homeless and without family by the conflict.  The only thing they have left of value is their mother's jewellery, enough to barter for passage to freedom - for one.
The score is really captivating and the cast is very diverse and talented!
For more information about the show and to see some promo photos check out the company's website at www.thickandthintheatreproductions.com or follow us on Facebook at Seeking Refuge, Toronto Fringe 2017.
Our show times are Friday July 7, 3:30 pm/Saturday July 8, 9:15 pm/Sunday July 9, 3:00 pm/Tuesday July 11, 9:00 pm/Thursday July 13, 7:00 pm/Friday July 14, 4:00 pm/Sunday July 16, 5:15 pm  Randolph Theatre is at  736 Bathurst St - one block south of Bloor.  For advance tickets, go to www.torontofringe.com, or buy tickets at the door for $12 starting one hour before the show.

Bloor Street United Church
Monarchy and Mayhem - 8pm
300 Bloor St West
Toronto, Ontario [map]
Price: $25

"Monarchy and Mayhem"? What does that mean?

This concert - featuring newchoir too - has two purposes. Let's take "Monarchy" first. We will be highlighting the amazing contribution of songwriters, singers and bands that hail from Great Britain. Whilst that county is going through a major trial with Brexit and other challenges - we will be honouring the best of Britain - BRITISH ROCK!

It may rain a lot in Britain. The football team may suck. And their politicians may not be able to get their act together. But they have also given us The Who, The Beatles, The Police, the Stones, Oasis, The Eurythmics, and Adele - all of which you will hear at this concert. Rule Brittania!

"Mayhem"? Well - there is no doubt the world is going through major upheaval right now. Ordinary people are in the streets across the world - demanding their rights and refusing to be ignored. This is nothing new of course and music has always been part of that. We celebrate the "mayhem" of rebellion - of music from around the world inspired by people's movements: Fleetwood Mac, Sam Cooke, George Michael, Crosby, Stills and Nash, Fun, Coldplay, and Tracy Chapman. All of these artists have had important things to say in the spirit of rebellion. We will celebrating the musical mayhem of our history and our present - and rocking out at the same time!

What is "newchoir too"?

"newchoir too" is part of the "newchoir" family - which includes Toronto's first rock choir, "newchoir". But we are also our own separate entity - with different members and a different conductor. At this concert we will present powerful songs as a full ensemble and also feature several small groups from within our ranks - as well as a special small group presentation from or sister choir: newchoir.
Oh yes - we also rock pretty hard!

The concert will be accompanied by a kick-ass 4 piece band led by conductor/pianist Robert Graham - his first concert since taking over the role of musical director in September.

Who says Toronto's Musical Theatre community doesn't care! I know from experience that when they hear about a clear cut case of appalling injustice - THEY STEP UP TO THE PLATE!

Who are these people who are donating their time and talent for this crucial cause? Check out this list of talented stars who will be performing!

Mark CassiusAlessandro CostantiniDaniel Williston, Jennifer Walls, Tim Porter, Tessus Barao, Esther VallinsKarina BershteynTessa Gooden,Sarah StrangeTiera Lee Watts

Plus more to come! Their instructions? "Sing two songs that make you sound amazing! "YOU DO NOT WANT TO MISS THIS! And please share this important event on FB and elsewhere!

So WHY are these beautiful people donating their time and talent?

Jose Figueroa is the type of immigrant any country would want. His wife and three children were described by the Langley Times as a "model immigrant family". He has lived in Canada for almost 18 years and has always worked hard to support his wife and three Canadian born children (including one with autism).

Yet for over a year he has been living in a church in Langley B.C. - unable to work and separated from his family. Why? Because the Harper Government wants to deport him.

Jose Fiogueroa was a student leader in El Slavador in the 1980s - a very dangerous thing to be. The Government of El Salvador killed 80,000 people between 1980 and 1992. Like many people, Jose was a member of the FMLN - the Jose Marti Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front. This group had mass support - largely because the Government of the day was so brutal - they used rape, torture, and death squads to silence any opposition - they even murdered the people's beloved Archbishop Romero, who spoke out against the regime. They also fired on the people who attended his funeral - killing score more.

There are 150,000 Salvadorans in Canada - most were members or sympathetic to the FMLN - which is why they were forced to flee. Jose was just one of them.

So all these years later Jose has been accused of belonging to a "terrorist group". Despite the fact he never picked up a gun in the conflict. Despite the fact that the FMLN has won the last two elections in El Salvador and is currently the Government. Despite the fact that the current president of El Salvador is an ex-combatant with the FMLN. Despite the fact that our Government continues to hold high level diplomatic relations with these so called "terrorists". Despite the fact that no other Government or international body considers the FMN to be a terrorist group.

Jose won an appeal in the Federal Court in July last year and has been waiting since then for a new decision maker to rule on his case. The Government is happy for him to wait forever it seems. The CBSA refuses to drop the arrest warrant - they want him to wait in a jail cell. This is why he remains in the church. The CBSA is there in the car park almost every day - filming him and using other tactics to stress him out. Your taxpayers dollars are paying for them to be there. They are bullying an innocent family.

It is hard to defend yourself in tho country unless you are rich and can afford lawyers. Jose is running out of money. This will impact the achievement of justice in his case.

Please come to this concert and donate what you can. All proceeds go to the Figueroa family for legal costs and to be blunt.....food.

More info about jose can be found at www.wearejose.com
Donations can also be made there.

Thank you to all the wonderful performers who made this happen! Please share widely!

By now, many of you will know of my involvement with Jose Figueroa and his family - a man facing deportation from Canada to El Salvador. Why? Because the Canadian Government views his role as a student leader in 1980's El Salvador against the barbaric torturers who ruled at the time as somehow "terrorist". More info about this appalling breach of justice can be found at www.wearejose.org.

Despite his brave, non-violent opposition to a junta that killed almost 80,000 people - he is in imminent danger of being wrenched apart from his beloved family - his wife Ivania and three Canadian born children. He has been forced into sanctuary for almost three months now in a BC church. Already bankrupted by legal debt to fight his case - he has been unable to work to provide for his family. They need our help!

I have seen Jose age noticeably since I first got involved in this - the stress on him and his family is unbelievable. I have heard him sob in frustration at the frustration of not being able to convince the Government of his innocence. I have heard the fear in his wife and family's voices as they face the real fear of having their Father taken away from them.

So, together with several of my guitar playing friends we have decided to help! We will be busking on the streets of Toronto on the afternoon of Jan 15th. If you can't make it please read below to find out how you can offer your moral and/or financial support for this family who needs it so badly!

Why Jan 15th?

1. The date marks the third anniversary of the "WE ARE JOSE CAMPAIGN" - a worldwide campaign of supporters who are striving to make the Canadian Government see sense and allow Jose to stay.

2. Jan 15th WAS to be the date of Jose's case before the Federal Court - in an attempt to overturn his permanent residency rejection by the Government. In true heartless fashion the Government has failed to produce the required documents to the Court - pushing the date forward...but we are going ahead anyway and show the Court and the Government just how many people support Jose!

Please join myself, DANIEL WILLISTON (yes the star of EVIL DEAD!), plus superstars SARA WILKINSON, DAN THOMPSON, DUFF MacDONALD, JJ THOMPSON and more as we sing out our support for the Figueroa family. All donations will go directly to the family. ALL PERFORMERS WELCOME! (please message me if you want to join us!)

We are trying to raise money for legal representation for a Salvadoran refugee in BC - his name is Jose Figueroa. He is under a deportation order because of his non violent support for the opposition during the dark days of the military dictatorship in El Salvador in the 80s and 90s. He is innocent and desperately needs legal representation before he is deported away from his wife and three children.

ONE GOOD REASON TO COME AND SEE “VOCAL SUPPORT”

Many of you reading this are participants, and/or fans of the arts in Toronto. One thing I have learned in my short time in this city working as pianist/MD/vocal/repertoire coach is that WE HAVE A LOT OF TALENTED SINGERS IN TORONTO!

But working behind the scenes with these talented singers are equally talented people. They are they ones that prepare you for your audition, work on your technique so that you can sing safely and with longevity, improve your ab...
ility as a singer, and inspire you to understand the meaning behind the song and help you present that meaning to the audience. There work can sometime be under-appreciated but there is no doubt:

WE HAVE A LOT OF FANTASTIC VOCAL COACHES IN TORONTO!

But here is a little secret I have learned. I play piano a lot for these coaches and sometimes they actually SING! It might be a warmup exercise, or a few bars by means of demonstrating their teaching point. Sometimes when they do this I think:

“OH MY GOD – YOU SING LIKE AN ANGEL!”

Don't you think it's time these people came out from backstage and into the spotlight! Wouldn't you love to hear your vocal coach perform? Singing a few bars is one thing but wouldn't you like to hear them actaully sing IN a bar? Well now you can!

LOU CORBETT live! ALAN REID live! PATRICA WARNOCK live! MEGAN BENJAFIELD live!

You know their work. Now come and hear them sing their favourites! I will be on piano duties as well as singing a couple of my own tunes too.

Here are the deets. Book the day off and invite all your friends – please share widely so we can get a lot of people out to support these wonderful people:

SUNDAY MARCH 24TH @ 4PM
DOMINION HOTEL (500 Queen St East Toronto)

ANOTHER GOOD REASON TO GO SEE “VOCAL SUPPORT”

The word “support' has another meaning for this concert. As well as recognizing Lou, Alan, Trish and Megan there is a family in BC who REALLY need our support:

Whether you're new to Canada or your family has lived here for generations, you likely appreciate what it means to be Canadian and how lucky you are to live here. That’s definitely the case for Jose Figueroa – he loves Canada and does not want to leave. He legally came to BC to escape political violence 15 years ago -- he's married and has three kids who were all born in Canada… But the Harper government has deemed him a "national security threat" due to his former ties with a group in El Salvador called the FMLN (Farabundo Martí National Liberation Front) from 20 years ago when he was a university student. The Canadian government has labeled FMLN as a terrorist organization despite the fact that during El Salvador's civil war, the organization was internationally recognized as a legitimate opposition group… and the FLMN is currently the government of El Salvador. So why are the feds still trying to deport him? Two years ago Jose's supporters formed the "We Are Jose" campaign to put pressure on Public Safety Minister Vic Toews to grant an exemption to the deportation order... yet the deportation order still stands.

Not all you will know about what went on in El Salvador in the 70's 80's and early 90's. It was horrible. The government there was one of the worst human right abusers ever – people who opposed the government were tortured and murdered -70,000 to 80,000 in the 1980's alone. Part of Jose Figuero's work which the Canadian government is now deeming to be “terrorist” was protecting university students from being carted way and tortured to death!

Here's another thing. After the peace accords were signed and the war was officially over the FMLN became a legitimate political party. Two years ago they won power through the ballot box in an election deemed free and fair. Canada has diplomatic relations with the new FMLN government and even sent Peter Kent (the current environment minister to the inauguration of the new FMLN president!

So why are we deporting people who twenty years ago were “associated” with the FMLN if we as a nation SUPPORT the FMLN? Would we deport Nelson Mandela because of his anti-apartheid work?

This man stood up for human rights and democracy – things Canada is supposed to believe in. We should be proud to have him in our country.

And it's not just Jose and his family. Other people are getting caught up in this ridiculous definition on 'terrorism”. The threat of deportation is very real for many refugees.

A nation-wide campaign has been set up to protect these people – it is called the “WE ARE JOSE” campaign. They want to launch a legal challenge to the laws that declare people like Jose 'terrorists”. They need to raise some money for this. I want to help them. You can help by attending this concert. Entry is by donation - $10 suggested minimum. No maximum! Money well spent I think.

So consider yourself invited. It is going to be an entertaining concert with heart – please come!

To honour the support I have received from the people of Wolfe Island and Kingston, I am pleased to announce that "Storm in a Teacup" will be launched on Wolfe Island! After consulting with Chris Brown, the producer of "Storm in a Teacup", we have decided to hold a CD Listening Party at the Post Office Studios on Wolfe Island. This is where the album was recorded and it makes a nice setting for an indoor/outdoor evening of music, food and drinks, and good company. EVERYONE is welcome! Come along, have a drink and some nibblies, listen to the album in Chris's funky studio (we will have a great sound system!) with speakers outside as well. Get a signed copy and hobnob with other muisc lovers all in the beautiful early autumn locale of pictuesque Wolfe Island.... Here is what you need to know. The Party is on Saturday September 12th, starting at 5:30pm. It will be held at the POST OFFICE recording studio (otherwise known as Chris's place) at 26 Victoria Street, Marysville, Wolfe Island. If you are coming from Kingston, catch the 5pm boat (leave you car on the dock in Kingston) and walk onto the ferry. Turn left on the Main Street, then right onto Victoria (3 minute walk) I would love to see you there!
